Tailored separates that mix: the base of a modern business casual wardrobe, from the boutique.

Business casual for women means clothes that look professional without a full suit: tailored trousers or a skirt, a blouse, fine knit or polished top, an optional blazer, and clean, closed or low-heeled shoes. It sits between a formal suit and weekend clothes. Today it is also the most common way American women dress for work. In a 2023 Gallup poll, 51% of employed women said they wear business casual most days. The easiest way to build it is from tailored separates in a few neutrals that mix with each other. Below: what counts, what doesn't, and five outfits.

Key Takeaways

  • Business casual is defined by structure more than formality: tailored trousers, a real top, a layer with a shoulder.
  • It is now the default. Gallup found 41% of all U.S. workers, and 51% of women, wear it most days, up from 34% of workers in 2019.
  • A suit split into separates is the most efficient business casual wardrobe you can buy.
  • Jeans, leggings, athletic sneakers and anything see-through are where most dress codes draw the line.
  • In a warm climate, fabric weight matters more than the category: choose breathable blends with a little stretch.

What does business casual actually mean for women?

Business casual means you look ready for a meeting, but not for a courtroom. In practice that means trousers, a skirt or a dress with some tailoring, a top that is not a T-shirt or tank on its own, and shoes that are clean and not built for the gym.

The definition is fuzzy, which is why it causes so much anxiety. Even the Emily Post Institute calls casual business attire "pretty ambiguous", then settles on skirts, khakis or trousers with a blouse, knit or sweater, plus dresses and seasonal jackets. For women it rules out spaghetti straps and low necklines, and it adds one line worth remembering: always check your company's own dress code.

The easiest way to think about it is by structure rather than by a list of garments. Business casual clothes have a shape of their own. A tailored trouser keeps its crease. A blazer keeps its shoulder. A knit is fine gauge and holds its line. Casual clothes drape, stretch or slouch. When an outfit mixes the two, like a blazer over a plain knit, or tailored trousers with a loafer, it lands squarely in business casual.

That is also why Italian women never seem to struggle with it. Their everyday wardrobe is already built on tailored separates, and our piece on what everyone backstage at fashion week wears shows how far a simple uniform can go. You can see our tailored pieces in the jackets collection.

Where did business casual come from, and how has it changed?

It started in Hawaii and went national through a pair of khakis. Today it is simply how most offices dress.

In the 1960s the Hawaiian Fashion Guild campaigned to make the aloha shirt acceptable at work, arguing that suits made no sense in the heat and that local garment makers would benefit. By 1966, Aloha Friday had spread through offices across the state. In the early 1990s, casual Fridays reached the mainland, and Levi Strauss & Co., promoting its Dockers line, mailed an eight-page "Guide to Casual Businesswear" to 25,000 human resources managers in 1992. Many companies built their dress codes from it.

The pandemic moved things again. Gallup asked American workers how they dress in October 2019 and again in August 2023. Business casual rose from 34% to 41% of workers, while traditional business dress fell from 7% to 3%, the lowest Gallup has measured. Among women the figure was 51%. Gallup noted that workers who had ever telecommuted were far more likely to wear business casual than those who had not.

What changed is not that offices got sloppier. The suit disappeared, and business casual absorbed its job. That means it now has to cover client meetings and presentations as well as ordinary Tuesdays, which is why the tailored end of business casual matters more than ever. Our piece on the Italian blazer covers the one layer that does most of that work.

What counts as business casual, and what doesn't?

Tailored trousers, midi skirts, blouses, fine knits, blazers, vests and simple dresses count. Jeans, leggings, graphic tees, athletic sneakers, flip-flops and anything sheer usually do not.

The table below is the version we give clients who ask. Every workplace has its own rules, so treat it as the default when nobody has told you otherwise.

Category Yes Depends on the office Usually no
Bottoms Tailored trousers, wide-leg trousers, midi skirts Dark, clean jeans on Fridays Leggings, shorts, distressed denim
Tops Blouses, fine knits, shell tops under a layer Plain tees under a blazer Graphic tees, crop tops, sheer tops alone
Layers Blazers, tailored vests, cardigans Soft bomber jackets Hoodies, fleece
Dresses Shift, sheath, shirt dresses, blazer dresses Knit midi dresses Sundresses, very short hems
Shoes Loafers, pumps, low heels, ballet flats Clean leather sneakers Flip-flops, athletic shoes

The most useful single piece on the "yes" list is a good pair of tailored trousers. Our beige glen plaid trousers by Barbara Alvisi are cut high on the waist and straight to the ankle in a structured polyester-viscose blend with 2% elastane. The glen plaid reads as a neutral from across a room and as a pattern up close, so they work with a cream blouse for a meeting or a bright knit for a creative office. We wrote more on this pattern in how to style plaid trousers and why plaid looks different on an Italian woman.

How do you build a business casual wardrobe from a few pieces?

Beige plaid double-breasted blazer and matching straight trousers worn as a suit
A suit that splits into separates. Shop.

Buy a suit and wear it apart. A matching blazer and trousers give you one formal outfit and at least four business casual ones, because each half works on its own.

This is the approach we take when buying tailoring in Italy: choose a suit in a soft neutral or a quiet pattern, so the jacket works over other trousers and the trousers work with other tops. Our beige plaid double-breasted blazer suit set by Barbara Alvisi is cut relaxed, with wooden buttons, in a polyester-viscose blend with a touch of stretch. Worn together, it is the most formal thing you need for most offices. Split, the blazer goes over a plain knit and dark trousers, and the trousers go under a cardigan or vest.

Around that suit, add:

  • One more pair of trousers in a different shape, ideally wide-leg, so you can change the silhouette. See how to style wide-leg trousers.
  • Three tops: a cream blouse, a fine knit in a color you like, a plain shell or tank that disappears under a jacket.
  • One tailored vest, which works as a top on its own or as a third layer. Our beige elegance vest by Imperial has a shawl collar and a three-button front; we cover the rest in how to style a vest.
  • Two pairs of shoes: a loafer and a low pump.

That is roughly ten pieces and more than a dozen outfits. It is the same logic as an Italian capsule wardrobe, just aimed at Monday to Friday.

What are five business casual outfits that work?

Here are five outfits we build in the boutique, from the most formal to the most relaxed. Each one uses pieces that also appear in the others.

1. The split suit, worn together. The plaid blazer and trousers with a cream top and a low pump. For presentations and client meetings. This is as formal as business casual gets.

2. Blazer over something softer. The plaid blazer over a plain knit and dark wide-leg trousers. The jacket carries the authority, and the knit keeps it relaxed.

3. Plaid trousers and a bright knit. The glen plaid trousers with a fitted cardigan in a strong color, buttoned as a top. Good for creative offices and Fridays.

4. One printed piece. A pair of printed wide-leg trousers, like our Kontatto high-waisted printed trousers in polyester with 8% elastane, with a plain white knit top and a simple shoe. When the trousers have a pattern, everything else is solid. They are cut very long for tall frames, and Kontatto recommends sizing up.

5. The vest as a top. A tailored vest buttoned over nothing, with tailored trousers. It looks deliberate and stays cool in a warm office.

All five are built on the same idea: one structured piece per outfit, and nothing competing with it. Browse all our pants for the second trouser.

How do you do business casual in a warm climate like Florida?

Choose lighter fabrics with a little stretch, favor vests and short or sleeveless layers, and treat the blazer as something you wear indoors. In Sarasota, the problem is not the heat outside. It is the difference between 85°F in the parking lot and 70°F in the conference room.

A few rules we have learned from dressing clients here. Look for blends of polyester or viscose with elastane rather than heavy wool; they hold a crease without trapping heat. Carry the jacket, do not wear it, until you are inside. A tailored vest gives you the structure of a blazer with bare arms, which is why it is one of our most useful pieces for Florida offices. And keep a fine knit in your bag for air-conditioning.

Color helps too. Beige, stone, cream and soft plaids look cooler than black and navy and hide less of the fabric's quality. Our Barbara Alvisi collection has most of our warm-weather tailoring in one place, and you can read more about how we source it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are jeans business casual for women?

Sometimes. Many offices allow dark, clean, well-fitted jeans, especially on Fridays, when they are worn with a blazer or a polished top. Distressed or light-wash denim is almost never business casual. If you are new, wait to see what others wear.

Is a blazer required for business casual?

No. A blazer is the easiest way to make an outfit look more professional, but a fine knit, a tailored vest or a structured blouse can do the same job. Keep one blazer at work for unexpected meetings.

Are leggings business casual?

Generally not. Leggings read as athletic or loungewear in most offices. Knit trousers with a real waistband and a pressed leg are the business casual alternative.

What shoes are business casual for women?

Loafers, low pumps, kitten heels, ballet flats and clean leather ankle boots. In some offices, minimal leather sneakers are acceptable. Flip-flops and athletic shoes are not.

What is the difference between business casual and smart casual?

Business casual is for work and leans tailored. Smart casual is usually for social settings and allows more relaxed pieces, like good jeans with a blazer. There is a lot of overlap, and many people use the terms interchangeably.
