Layers, a warm neutral and one good bag: the Italian fall travel kit, from the boutique.
Pack for two seasons in one suitcase. In October, most of Italy is mild, with daytime highs from the mid-60s°F in Milan and Venice to the low 70s in Rome and Florence and the mid-70s in Naples and Palermo, and evenings mostly in the 50s. November is about ten degrees cooler and noticeably wetter. So bring light layers you can add and remove, trousers or midi skirts rather than shorts, one warm jacket, closed shoes you can walk in all day, a scarf and a compact umbrella. Below: city-by-city weather, a packing list, church rules and what Italian women actually wear.
Key Takeaways
- October is mild almost everywhere, with warm afternoons and cool evenings. November is cooler, grayer and one of the wettest months of the year.
- The north (Milan, Venice) runs about six to ten degrees cooler than Rome, Naples and Sicily. Pack for the coldest city on your route.
- Italians switch to fall clothes by the calendar, not the thermometer. Shorts and flip-flops mark you as a visitor by mid-October.
- Layering beats bulk: a light jacket, a fine knit and a scarf cover a 20-degree swing between morning and afternoon.
- Churches, including St. Peter's Basilica, require covered shoulders and knees, so keep a scarf or cardigan in your bag.
What is the weather like in Italy in October and November?
October is the gentle month: warm, often sunny afternoons and cool mornings and evenings. November is cooler and wetter, with more gray days and, in the north, the first real cold. The numbers below are long-term averages from Climates to Travel, converted to Fahrenheit and rounded.
| City | October high / low | Rain days, Oct | November high / low | Rain days, Nov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milan | 66°F / 51°F | 7 | 54°F / 41°F | 9 |
| Venice | 66°F / 51°F | 7 | 56°F / 43°F | 6 |
| Florence | 71°F / 52°F | 9 | 60°F / 44°F | 9 |
| Rome | 72°F / 55°F | 7 | 62°F / 47°F | 9 |
| Naples and the Amalfi Coast | 74°F / 56°F | 8 | 65°F / 49°F | 11 |
| Palermo, Sicily | 76°F / 64°F | 8 | 69°F / 57°F | 10 |
Two things the averages hide. First, the swing within a day: in Florence in October you can start at 52°F at breakfast and reach 71°F by mid-afternoon. Second, the swing within the month: early October often feels like late summer, and Romans even have a word, the ottobrata, for a warm, bright October day. We wrote about it in Romans have a name for a warm day in October. By late November, the same city can be cold and wet. If your trip spans both months, pack for November and wear the lighter half early.
For comparison, Sarasota is still in the mid-80s in October. If you are flying from Florida, the first Italian evening will feel colder than the numbers suggest.
What do Italian women actually wear in October?
They wear fall clothes, even when it is warm. Italians dress by the season on the calendar, and by the middle of October the linen, the sandals and the bright summer colors are put away regardless of the temperature.
What replaces them is a set of in-between pieces. Trousers in wool blends or heavier viscose instead of linen. Midi skirts with a closed shoe. A fine knit over the shoulders in the morning, tucked into a bag by noon. A light jacket: a trench, a tailored blazer, or a soft bomber in a neutral. The palette moves to brown, camel, olive, burgundy, navy and cream. There is an Italian phrase for this awkward stretch of the year, mezze stagioni, the in-between seasons, and a lot of complaining about them; our piece on what every Italian says about October explains why.
Our cream geometric-print summer bomber is exactly this kind of piece. It is made in Italy in 80% viscose and 20% elastane, a sheer chiffon-weight cloth with gathered cuffs and a gold-tone zip. It is a layer, not a coat, which is what you want over a knit on a 65°F afternoon. For more ideas, see how to style a bomber jacket so it does not look like a costume.
What they do not wear, even on a warm day: shorts in the city, flip-flops, athletic leggings as trousers, and baseball caps. None of this is a rule anyone will enforce. It just marks you as a visitor before you open your mouth.
What should you pack for Italy in October and November?
Pack a small number of pieces that layer, in two or three colors that all go together. One suitcase of neutrals will cover a two-week trip across both months.
Here is the list we give clients who stop by the boutique before a fall trip:
- Two pairs of trousers. One tailored, one wide-leg or palazzo. They handle cool evenings better than skirts and work in churches.
- One midi skirt or dress for dinners, worn with a closed shoe or low boot.
- Three or four tops: a fine knit, a silk or satin blouse, a simple long-sleeve tee.
- Two layers: a light jacket for October and a warmer coat or wool blazer if you are there in November or heading north.
- A scarf. It is warmth, church coverage and the fastest way to look put together. See the small gesture that means summer is over in Italy.
- Two pairs of shoes: flat walking shoes you have already broken in, and one dressier pair. Cobblestones destroy thin heels.
- A compact umbrella and a bag that closes.
If you pack light and want the Milanese version of this, read what is inside a Milanese woman's suitcase. And think about the flight itself: our note on the one thing Italian women never wear on a plane is the first step of the packing list. Our pants collection is a good place to start if you are missing a travel trouser.
How should you dress for each region?
Dress for the north as if it were already November and for the south as if it were still September. Italy is long, and the difference between Milan and Palermo in late October can be more than ten degrees.
Milan, the lakes and Turin. The coolest and most formal. Tailored trousers, a real jacket, closed shoes, darker colors. By November, a wool coat. Milan is also where you will feel most underdressed in sneakers.
Venice. Similar temperatures to Milan, with damp air off the lagoon. October to December is the main season for acqua alta, the high tides that flood low-lying parts of the city. The MOSE flood barrier, operating since 2020, now blocks the worst of them, but shallow flooding still happens. Pack shoes you do not mind getting wet, or buy the plastic overboots sold around town.
Florence and Tuscany. Warm afternoons, cool evenings, and the most rainy days in October of any city on our list. Layers and a waterproof jacket. If you are going into the countryside for the vendemmia or truffle season, bring a flat shoe with grip.
Rome. Mild in October, wet in November. Our chocolate brown palazzo pants, made in Italy by Imperial in a fluid, matte weave, are the kind of piece that goes from a museum morning to an evening in Trastevere with only a change of shoe. More on the silhouette in how to style wide-leg trousers.
Naples, the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. Still warm enough in October for a light dress by day and, some years, a swim. November brings more rain. Pack as for late summer, with one real layer for evenings.
What are the dress rules for churches and dinners?
Cover your shoulders and knees for churches, and dress one step up from what you would wear at home for dinner. That is the whole rule, and it is enforced more strictly than most visitors expect.
At St. Peter's Basilica, the official rule is that shoulders must be covered, and women need skirts below the knee or trousers. Guards check at the entrance and turn people away. Many churches across Italy follow the same code. A scarf over bare shoulders usually works; a skirt above the knee usually does not, so trousers or a midi length are the safe choice on church days.
Dinner in Italy starts late, often at 8 or 8:30 p.m., and people dress for it. Not formally, but deliberately. A good pair of trousers or a midi skirt, a nicer top, real shoes and a light jacket. In October and November the evening is also when the temperature drops, so the jacket is not optional. We wrote about this instinct in Romans don't pack for the beach, they pack for eight o'clock.
A cream woven bag like our knot-handle hobo covers both days and dinners. The cream shade is warm enough for fall camels and browns. Browse more in our bags collection.
What is happening in Italy in October and November 2026?
Fall is festival season, and a few dates are worth planning your wardrobe around.
- Alba White Truffle Fair, Piedmont: every weekend from October 10 to December 6, 2026, at the Cortile della Maddalena. Country roads, cool mornings, flat shoes.
- Rome Film Fest: October 13 to 25, 2026, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, with a public red carpet.
- Clocks go back: Italy returns to standard time on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Evenings get dark an hour earlier, and the temperature drops with the sun.
- Ognissanti, All Saints' Day: November 1 is a national public holiday. Many shops and offices close.
- Eurochocolate, Perugia: November 13 to 22, 2026, having moved from its traditional October slot this year.
For all of them, the dress code is the same Italian fall formula: warm neutrals, a real jacket, shoes you can walk in. Our jackets collection has the in-between layers, and you can read more about how we source them in Italy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is October a good time to visit Italy?
For many travelers it is one of the best. The summer crowds thin out, temperatures are mild across most of the country, and it is harvest and festival season. The trade-off is shorter days and a higher chance of rain than in September.
Can you wear shorts in Italy in October?
You can, but few Italians do in cities after the start of October, and you cannot wear them into St. Peter's Basilica or many other churches. Light trousers or a midi skirt are more comfortable in the cool mornings anyway.
Do I need a coat for Italy in November?
For the north, yes: Milan and Venice average lows in the low 40s°F in November. For Rome and the south, a warm jacket or wool blazer with a knit underneath is usually enough.
What shoes should I pack for Italy in the fall?
One pair of broken-in flat walking shoes or loafers, and one dressier pair with a low, sturdy heel. Leave thin stilettos at home. If you are visiting Venice in November, bring a pair you do not mind getting wet.
What colors do Italians wear in October?
Warm neutrals: brown, camel, cream, olive, burgundy and navy. Bright summer colors and white linen are usually put away by mid-October.
